Water resistance and rot resistance

High density of Siberian larch makes it difficult for moisture and water to penetrate the wood. Moreover, prolonged exposure to water including sea water considerably increases the hardness of the wood. That’s why decking and other larch timber products used outdoors perfectly retain their distinctive characteristics and do not warp under changing environmental conditions.

Siberian larch is also rich with resin and tannin which protect it from decay and destruction by fungi and mold.

Biological resistance

The unique composition of the resin makes Siberian larch resistant to destruction by insects, wood borers, while special treatment gives it extra protection.

Density and longevity

According to the degree of hardness, larchwood takes place between pine (softwood) and oak (hardwood). At the same time, strength of the larchwood which increases as years pass by is much higher than that of the oak.

Wood density increases the lifetime of products made from Siberian larch, that’s why it is used to manufacture railway sleepers, piles, and various support structures.

Thermal conductivity and thermal capacity

Larchwood has low heat conductivity and at the same time high heat capacity. It warms up quite slowly, accumulates heat and then gradually and evenly spreads it, thus smoothing thermal fluctuations.

Therefore, in areas where larch timber products are used, such as floor board, furniture board, European lining board, etc., the temperature is always very comfortable. It is cool there in summer and warm in winter.

Fire resistance and freeze-thaw resistance

Things made from Siberian larch easily withstand drops and harsh temperatures.

This proves the wood is perfect for year-round use under changing climate and weather conditions. Besides, the fire resistance of larchwood is twice higher than that of the pine.

Ecological cleanness and healing properties

The healing properties of Siberian larch are determined by its nature and geographic range. It contains antioxidants that help body fight aging, stress, unfavorable environments, and various diseases. Being used in living areas, larch boosts immunity to colds, flu and viral diseases, improves the nervous system and blood circulation, and helps normalize blood pressure and metabolism.

Aesthetics

Siberian larchwood has a beautiful texture with a specific pattern and clearly seen annual growth rings. The heartwood is light brown to dark red brown and can vary largely, which greatly distinguishes it from oak, beech, maple, ash tree, and other trees. Moreover, the wood doesn’t turn blue over the years, reacts well to toners and is almost free of knots. All the above characteristics make Siberian larch highly valuable and amazing decorative material.

Affordability

Larch is quite inexpensive as it grows over a wide geographic area covering almost 2/5 of the entire forest area in Russia. A tree may reach 50 m tall with a trunk up to 2 m in diameter, and processing its straight logs one can produce a lot of usable timber.
